What do Ann Coulter and Religious Extremists have in common?
Ann Coulter and extremists and fundamentalists of all persuasions love to talk tough. Yet, neither of them is accustomed to facing the appropriate consequences. However, Ann Coulter is in desperate need of being set straight and the time for someone to do this cannot come soon enough!
The reality of the situation is that Ann Coulter is making a mockery of the work being done by the president she supposedly supports, George W. Bush as well as his ambassador to the Islamic world, Karen Hughes. During the 2006 Conservative Political Action Committee Conference in Washington D.C., I confronted Ann Coulter regarding her version of what United States Foreign Policy towards the Middle East should be. “Rag-Head talks tough, Rag-Head faces consequences” was her actual response. We all know about Ann Coulter’s traditional sensationalism. She loves to push the envelope much like Howard Stern in a desperate attempt to further gain attention. At least Howard Stern remains sincere towards his principles when doing so. After apologizing for the actions of the terrorists and politely explaining to Miss Coulter that not all Muslims are terrorists and do not deserve to be called Ragheads, she referred to it as just a joke. Despite this rare admission, many conservatives in the audience were not laughing. The only funny thing about Miss Coulter is that this is not the first time she has made these preposterous racial slurs towards Arab Americans. She has also said, “Liberals are about to become the last people to figure out that Arabs lie.” Miss Coulter argues that airports should change their security policies and establish a separate line for Arab men whose complexion suggests that they could be from the Middle East. If Miss Coulter wants to help ambassador Karen Hughes and President Bush win Arab and Muslim allies in the current “war on terror”, she needs to figure out what side she is really on, what principles she plans to uphold herself while representing the conservative establishment in America, and become far more responsible while using her constitutional right to free speech. Otherwise, she should just fess up to the fact that she is a marginalized right-wing drama queen as well as a completely comfortable and overt racist.
In order for the Republican Party to ensure success in the 2006 elections as well as future elections, we need to spread the Republican message nationally to people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. We stand for a core set of morally encompassing values; however, we are open to all those who want to join in and represent these values. I remember vividly the banners proclaiming that on 9/11, the terrorists hijacked not just the airplanes, but also the religion of over 1.2 billion people. Similarly, the party of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Regan is being hijacked by sensationalist figures such as Miss Coulter. As our hardworking chairman of the Republican National Committee, Ken Mehlman, travels nationwide to such places as the historical black College of Howard University, we need to provide him with information and specific examples on why more minorities and more Muslims need to join the Republican Party. In order to convince these minorities and Muslims to become Republican, we must remind everyone that Miss Coulter does not by any measure represent most Republicans or most conservatives.
