As an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Akir Khan helped to establish a peer mentoring program for incoming Business School students at the Belk College of Business. Akir was also the founder and editor in chief of the Peer Advisory Newsletter. Akir has worked as a reporter for the Guilford Sun Newspaper and was promoted to news editor before leaving to attend UNC-Charlotte. Akir has worked in successful campaigns with Judge Eric Levinson for the North Carolina Court of Appeals and Patrick McCrory for Mayor of Charlotte, NC .
In April 2004, Akir met President Bush personally during a campaign event in North Carolina and Akir told the President that he wanted to help him with the Muslim vote. President Bush encouraged Akir to get involved. Akir worked as an intern for the College Republican National Committee and, in October 2004, he was asked to serve as a Marshall for the Bush/Cheney campaign in Pennsylvania.
In addition, during the 2004 Presidential campaign Akir Khan had editorials published in Pakistan Link Newspaper, Arab-American News, Muslim Observer, US News and World Report and an online Arabic journal in New Jersey. He also appeared as a guest on the WB Network in an "I Vote" forum and on the Islamic Broadcast Network.
Akir has been invited twice as a guest speaker at the Pakistan embassy in Washington D.C. In April 2005, he served as a guest speaker at the Rising Leaders Conference at the Pakistan embassy and spoke about the importance of Rising Leaders and Pakistani-Americans to get involved in the American society through politics. Akir graduated in May 2005 from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a B.S. degree in Marketing. In the future, Akir plans to attend law school in his home state of North Carolina.
